We MI fans have been waiting for MIUI 9 since what seems like an eternity now. But well it is finally here.  Xiaomi has just rolled out the very first batch to the closed beta group. Well, I got my hands on it. I’ve been using the Alpha Rom of MIUI 9, so the global version might not see some of the features. So let’s talk about all the features of MIUI 9.

  • Smart Assistant: Since every smartphone company is making smart assistant for their device, sure thing Xiaomi doesn’t want to be left behind. There is a new smart assistant which can be accessed by swiping right on the home screen. It includes various cards for weather, notes, calendar, etc. There is also a universal search bar on the assistant page which you can use to search almost everything on your device- like songs, documents, contacts, browser history, etc.

  • Improved home screen: The home screen has totally been revamped. When you move apps you can have real time preview of how it’ll be like when placed in home screen pages. You can also select multiple apps and uninstall them at once. For me, it is one of the best features of MIUI 9.
  • Widget: The widget page looks similar to that of stock Android now.

  • Split-screen: Xiaomi finally brings the most awaited feature “Split-screen” in MIUI 9. Multitasking is a lot easier now. Additionally, you can also double tap the recent button to switch to the last app.

  • Notification Shade: MIUI 9 includes Inline Quick Reply, which means you can directly reply from the notifications itself.
We also have an option to swipe left on a notification to mark it as unimportant. Doing this will mute further notifications from the selected app.

  • Lock screen: If you swipe right on the lock screen, you can see a list of Xiaomi connected devices via MI home and a shortcut to MI Remote. There’s also a toggle for the flashlight which may come handy in certain situations. Sadly there’s no option to customize the shortcuts.

  • Themes: The new update added three new themes – “Limitless”, “color fantasy” and “cool black”. All the themes are really cool and the icons are a delight to the eyes.

  • Animations: The icons of system apps moves a bit when closed. This is a small change and most of you may not notice it.

  • MIUI labs: Some features which need further testing are kept here. Right now we have two features here.
Trigger apps [Long press any text to copy it or search for the word on Internet]
Find Photos in Gallery [This feature can be used only in China right now]
